JOEY Internship Program

Our first intake of brand new talent

A paid internship on the human division at MADITECH, the company behind JOEY. You pick a track, you ship real work on real products, and if you pass the Final Exam at the end, your onboarding spot is guaranteed.

Paid8 tracksNonprofit hours through TRUETH22 live and internal projectsOnboarding spot guaranteed on passing

The guarantee

Pass the Final Exam and your onboarding spot is guaranteed. Here is exactly what that means, with nothing kept in a footnote.

If the four conditions below are met, MADITECH will offer you a paid onboarding spot on the human division. There is no second interview loop and no separate hiring committee standing between you and that offer. The exam is the bar.

  1. You complete the full internship term.

  2. You pass the end of internship Final Exam.

  3. You are legally eligible to work in the United States at that time.

  4. A seat is open on your track when you finish. If it is not, we offer you the nearest track that is staffing, or hold your guaranteed spot for the next cohort, whichever you prefer.

What we are not doing on this page is naming a title, a team or a start date, because those are set per cohort and a detail invented for a recruiting page is worse than no detail at all. You will have all three in writing, and time to think about them, before you accept anything.

This internship is paid. The rate is agreed case by case, based on your track, your experience and the hours you can commit, and it is stated in writing in your offer before you accept anything.

16 of 20 seats in the first cohort are open. The recruiting evening runs the first of every month, 7pm to 9pm, and the dates are further down this page.

The tracks

Eight ways in, and you are not locked into the one you pick

You apply to a track and you spend most of your time in it. You are also on a team small enough that crossing into another track is a conversation, not a transfer request. Plenty of people arrive wanting to write code and leave knowing they would rather design, or the reverse.

  1. AI and agent engineering

The part of the company that is actually AI. You work on the agent fleet that runs the business, not on a chat box bolted onto a form.

    What you would actually do

    • Write and tune the prompts and tool definitions behind JOEY Concierge and the desk agents
    • Build orchestration where one agent decomposes work and delegates bounded slices to cheaper models
    • Add provider failover so a feature keeps running when one model provider is exhausted or down
    • Build evaluations that catch a regression in agent behaviour before a customer does

    Surfaces you would touch

    JOEYMADITECH CENTRALDesk AgentsInference Engine

    What we look for

Curiosity about why a model did what it did, and the patience to measure it instead of guessing.

  2. Full stack web engineering

Ship pages and features to production sites that real people load today, in the same repos the full-time team uses.

    What you would actually do

    • Build features in Next.js App Router and TypeScript, from route to database and back
    • Model and query data in Postgres through Supabase, including row level security
    • Take a design from a rough sketch to an accessible, responsive, dark mode correct page
    • Fix the bugs your own change caused, because you own it after it ships

    Surfaces you would touch

    JOEYTRUETH FoundationSparrowverseAnomalyCentralAuto Paint Expert (APE)

    What we look for

You have built something on your own and shipped it somewhere a stranger could use it.

  3. Data and analytics

Turn what the fleet does all day into numbers somebody can act on, and keep those numbers honest.

    What you would actually do

    • Build dashboard cards that read live data and say plainly when the data is stale
    • Write the export and backup jobs that make a dataset recoverable, then prove a restore works
    • Investigate a metric that looks wrong and find out whether the metric or the system is broken
    • Work on the internal quantitative research engine in its paper and shadow lanes

    Surfaces you would touch

MADITECH CENTRALWorld MonitorLucky Quant EngineDream Dashboard

    What we look for

You are the person who asks where a number came from before quoting it.

  4. Growth, SEO and content

We have well over a hundred landing pages and a free tool suite. This track owns whether any of it gets found.

    What you would actually do

    • Research what car salespeople actually search for, then build the page that answers it
    • Write and ship landing pages, blog posts and changelog entries that are true and specific
    • Add structured data and fix the technical SEO faults that quietly stop a page being crawled
    • Read the analytics afterwards and kill what did not work

    Surfaces you would touch

JOEY Free Dealer ToolsJOEYAutoDealsCentralTims Auto Buyers

    What we look for

You can write clearly and you would rather publish something honest than something clever.

  5. Design and brand

Several brands, one small team. Design here means deciding what a brand is, not decorating a page after the fact.

    What you would actually do

    • Build brand systems end to end, from the mark and the palette to the tokens in the codebase
    • Design product surfaces that hold up in light and dark theme and on a phone in a showroom
    • Work on motion and illustration where it earns its place, and cut it where it does not
    • Audit a shipped surface for accessibility and fix what fails

    Surfaces you would touch

    What we look for

A portfolio with your reasoning in it, not only the final frames.

  6. Sales operations and CRM automation

The showroom floor is where JOEY was built. This track sits closest to the actual customer problem.

    What you would actually do

    • Map how a real dealership CRM works and where a salesperson loses time inside it
    • Build and test automation against a shadow test tenant with synthetic data
    • Write the rules that decide when the system must stay silent, and prove they hold
    • Turn a messy manual process into something repeatable and documented

    Surfaces you would touch

    Dealership Automation SuiteJOEYKangaroo

    What we look for

Care about the person on the other end of the message. This track is held to the strictest safety rules we have.

  7. Reliability and infrastructure

A fleet of daemons and services runs around the clock. This track is why it is still running tomorrow.

    What you would actually do

    • Add health probes and dead man switches so a service that dies silently sets off an alarm
    • Build the failure path first, then force the failure and watch the alarm actually fire
    • Work incidents from symptom to root cause and write the record so it cannot recur unnoticed
    • Improve backups until a restore is something we have done, not something we assume

    Surfaces you would touch

    MADITECH CENTRALTenacitOS Mission ControlDesk Agents

    What we look for

You find it satisfying rather than tedious to make a thing fail on purpose.

  8. Nonprofit program work with TRUETH

Real nonprofit experience alongside the commercial work, on a 501(c)(3) serving children and families.

    What you would actually do

    • Support program operations for cohorts, scholarships and family communication
    • Prepare partner and school outreach materials, and help run the intake conversations
    • Build and maintain the public site, documents and pamphlets that families read first
    • Help gather and organise the evidence base that clinical and school partners ask for

    Surfaces you would touch

    TRUETH Foundation

    What we look for

Steadiness and discretion. You will be near families at a hard moment, and that comes first.

The Final Exam

One exam, three parts, and none of them are multiple choice

The exam exists so the guarantee can exist. It is the same bar for every track, applied to the work of that track, and it is designed to be passable by anyone who genuinely did the internship rather than sat through it.

Part 1

A build you own

A real piece of work on a real surface, scoped with your supervisor at the start of the term and shipped before the end of it. Not a toy exercise and not a take home puzzle. Something that goes live and that you can point at afterwards.

Part 2

A defence

You walk the team through what you built, why you chose that approach, what you tried that failed, and what would break if somebody deleted your work. Explaining the reasoning is the part we grade hardest, because it is the part that shows you understood the system.

Part 3

A live fix

Something real goes wrong in front of you and you work it. We are not looking for the fastest fix. We are looking for whether you verify before you claim it is fixed.

You will know how you are tracking against all three long before the end. Your supervisor tells you where you stand at the midpoint, in writing, while there is still time to do something about it. Nobody gets to the last week and finds out for the first time that they were behind.

University class credit

We do not grant academic credit. Only your school can do that.

What we do is build the program so it clears the bar most schools set for an internship that counts, and then do the administrative work that usually falls on the student. When your school sends paperwork, we fill it out. When it wants a supervisor evaluation, your supervisor writes it. When it wants signed hour logs, we sign them. When it wants to speak to somebody here, there is a named person to speak to.

Whether credit is awarded is your institution's decision alone, and requirements differ between schools and even between departments. Confirm with your advisor or internship office before your first day, and tell us what they need. We would rather adjust the paperwork up front than find out at the end that a form was missing.

MADITECH is not an accredited educational institution and does not claim to be. Nothing on this page is an accreditation, an affiliation, or an endorsement by any school.

What we put in place so it can count

  • A named supervisor who is a real person on the team, not a shared inbox
  • A written learning agreement signed before your first day
  • Defined learning objectives per track, agreed with you and your advisor
  • A weekly hour commitment, with hours logged and countersigned
  • A midpoint evaluation and an end of term evaluation, in writing
  • A final report describing what you built and what you learned

Subject to your institution's approval in every case. If your school requires something not on this list, send it to us and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it.

The TRUETH collaboration

Nonprofit experience that is real work, not a volunteering afternoon

TRUETH Jin Sun Do is a movement-based mental and emotional regulation program for children ages 5 to 17, with particular focus on neurodivergent children. It was developed by Grand Master Won Kuk Kim over sixty years of martial arts mastery and thirty years of direct practice with neurodivergent children in Greater Seattle, unifying ten disciplines into one methodology.

Every session runs on three elements, structured breathwork, movement sequences, and emotional literacy. Cohorts are intentionally mixed, placing neurodivergent and neurotypical children together, which removes the stigma of a mental health program and replaces it with the pride of mastering something hard alongside others doing the same. No child is turned away for financial reasons.

MADITECH builds and runs the technology behind it. Interns on any track can take TRUETH work alongside their commercial work, and the TRUETH track is entirely nonprofit program work. Your hours there are nonprofit hours, and we will document them as such for your school.

This is the whole portfolio, not a highlight reel. Products, client brands, a nonprofit, a free tool suite, and the internal platform that keeps all of it running. Interns work on this list. Which part depends on your track.

Recruiting days

One evening a month, the same evening every month

You should not have to guess what a place is like from its website. The first of every month, 7pm to 9pm, at TRUETH headquarters. Come and see the team and the systems before you commit to anything. Nobody is turned away at the door for not having signed up.

In person

Monthly recruiting evening

Two hours with the team at TRUETH headquarters. We walk through what each track actually does, show the systems running, answer whatever gets asked, and talk to anyone who is ready. Same event every month, so if you cannot make this one there is another one four weeks later.

When
The first of every month, 7pm to 9pm
Where
TRUETH headquarters, Seattle, WA. The exact address is sent to you when you RSVP.
Next dates

The next four evenings

  1. Tuesday 1 September, 7pm
  2. Thursday 1 October, 7pm
  3. Sunday 1 November, 7pm
  4. Tuesday 1 December, 7pm

All four are at TRUETH headquarters, Seattle, WA. The exact address is sent to you when you RSVP.

Add the monthly evening to your calendar

The calendar file repeats on its own, so it keeps working past the four dates listed here.

16 of 20 seats in the first cohort are still open. 4 are taken. That number is updated when a seat is actually filled, so it is the real one.

Tell us you are coming

Two reasons to do this. We know to expect you and can get in touch if anything about the evening changes, and the exact street address is sent to you as soon as you are on the list.

or email careers@getjoey.app

What is still being finalised

This is the first cohort of a new program. The list below is everything we have not settled. None of it is hidden in a footnote and none of it is filled in with a number we made up, because you would find out the truth on day one anyway and by then you would have moved your life for it.

  • Term length and weekly hoursterm length to be set per cohort
  • First cohort start datestart date to be announced

Request information

Tell us where you are and what you want to build

This is not an application and it commits you to nothing. It puts you on the list for the first cohort and gets you the answers to the open items above as soon as they are settled. If you would rather just come and meet us first, the recruiting evening runs every month and the next dates are above.

or email careers@getjoey.app

We ask for a way to reach you and what you want to work on. We do not ask for a date of birth, a government identification number, or an address, and you should not send them.

Looking for a full time role instead? Those are on the careers page. General questions can go through contact.
